More Than Your Local Lumberyard
Lakeside Lumber was founded in 1980 by Rich Rossum in the small community of Ashby, Minnesota. What started as a local lumber supply has grown into a full-service building materials provider serving homeowners and contractors across west central Minnesota.
When Rich passed away in 2013, his son Mike took over the business and has continued the tradition of honest, hands-on service that Lakeside Lumber was built on. Today the company operates with a dedicated team of building professionals who know their products and know the needs of people building in this part of the state.
In Spring 2025, Lakeside Lumber completed a major showroom expansion to better serve customers and contractors across the region — and a second addition is planned for Fall 2026. After more than 45 years in business, we are still growing because the people we work with deserve a lumberyard that keeps getting better.
2026 BizCon North Dealer of the Year
In January 2026, Lakeside Lumber was named the 2026 BizCon North Dealer of the Year by BLD Connection — a leading regional trade association representing building material dealers and suppliers across the Midwest. The award recognizes an independent lumber dealer that demonstrates leadership, industry engagement, community commitment, and respect among peers.

Our Team
Our staff includes owners Mike and Heather and their team: Jamie, Scott, Dan, Sean, Judd, Andrew, Doug Z, Doug N, Levi R, Levi J, Jake, and Adam. Our in-house drafter Jamie produces permit-ready drawings and 3D renderings using Chief Architect for everything from new homes to garages, additions, and sheds.
Every person at Lakeside Lumber has hands-on knowledge of the products we sell. When you walk into our showroom, you are not getting a sales pitch. You are getting real answers from people who have worked with these materials and understand how they perform in Minnesota conditions.
Our Showroom
Stop by our showroom at 109 Birch Ave in Ashby to see and touch the products before you buy. We have samples of decking, shingles, steel, doors, windows, siding, cabinets, countertops, and more. Our staff will walk you through options and help you find exactly what fits your project and budget.
Contractor and Retail Accounts
We work with both homeowners taking on their own projects and contractors running professional jobs. Contractor accounts are available with competitive pricing. Whether you are building your first deck or framing your hundredth house, we are here to help.
Community Driven
Ashby is a small town and Lakeside Lumber is part of its fabric. We are members of the BLD Connection, the Vikingland Builders Association, the Lake Region Builders Association, the North Dakota Retail Lumbermen's Association, the Elbow Lake Chamber of Commerce, and the Fergus Falls Chamber of Commerce. Heather Rossum currently serves as Executive Secretary of the NDRLA.
